ARTIST STATEMENT

“A kaleidoscope of color, veggies, and letters this mural was created to amplify the playfulness and joy found within the East Boston courtyard it is located in. Inspired by the students of the Manassah E Bradley School and their student run garden, the mural pulls from the various plants they've grown and their sustainable farming education. Set against a vibrant teal backdrop is the brightly lettered message, Together We Grow, which refers both to the small and mighty garden the students have nurtured but also to the students themselves who will continue to grow and flourish with every passing year at the Manassah E Bradley School. Sprinkled with pollinating bees and butterflies this mural showcases the cycle of growth, nurturing, and giving back found in nature and essential for our communities.”

“TOGETHER  WE GROW”

DETAILS

INSPIRED BY YOUTH

As students tended to their gardens in the outdoor classroom, we learned to use the power of art to express our ideas about food and the environment in an emotional way. Through a drawing workshop, we explored the long path of processed foods from large factory farms to our kitchens, and discovered the importance that local, organic food has to our health and our environment. Yenny joined students in the outdoor classroom for a watercolor workshop where students created images of pollinators and plants that would inspire the concept for the final artwork.
